Targeting a Niche Market
For those new to internet marketing, the problem of competition with some of the larger companies on the net can be daunting. How and where can a lone marketer begin effectively? Niche marketing has been a solution for many in this situation, but finding or choosing a niche takes some thought and effort.

Pause and consider carefully the product you are selling or want to sell. Your sales efforts should be in an area in which you are knowledgeable or have some expertise. Your product may have the potential for wide appeal, but think about those to whom it might appeal the most. For example, does your product appeal to musicians? That is still a pretty wide market. Now narrow it down. Who is most likely to be interested--singers or instrumentalists? You may still want or need to narrow it down further. For instance, your product might appeal more to musicians of a certain age, or musicians who favor a certain genre of music.

After narrowing it down as much as possible, think of appropriate keywords. Perform a search with Google to see how many sites come up using these keywords. Next, visit a site that tracks keyword usage (such as Word Tracker or Overture) to see if there are plenty of users looking for that kind of information. If there are enough potential customers and the competition is low, you may have found a good niche in which to market.

Niche selection should be followed by optimizing your marketing plan with the niche in mind. For example, start by using keywords related to your niche in the title of your web site. Follow this step with more SEO (search engine optimization) efforts along the same line, including relevant article submission and regular blog postings. Another strategy for niche marketing is to study the competition in order to figure out how to make your site unique.

Finally, choose a niche that you enjoy or at least find somewhat interesting, as you will likely be spending a lot of time on writing and marketing in that area. Find a niche with plenty of potential customers and little competition, and you have a very good chance of watching your online business grow.

Climbing to the Top of the Search Engines

The best way to get free web site traffic is by getting to the elusive top of the search engines. Achieving a position near the top of the search engines can be difficult and takes a lot of time, but it pays off in a torrent of free traffic. Here are some ideas for optimizing your search engine placement, otherwise known as SEO (search engine optimization).

Use a descriptive title for each page of your website. The first words in the title should be the ones you expect customers to be using most as their search terms. The title will be highlighted in the search engines, and you want people to see what interests them.

Placing keywords in the right places can help in improving search engine ranking of your web site. Search engines look for important keywords in the headlines, subheads, and first paragraph. While you should make the first paragraph as rich in relevant keywords as possible, do not sacrifice content to do this.

Search engines view hyperlinks as important, so use appropriate keywords in hyperlinks. This technique works especially well when the name of the page to which you are hyperlinking has the same keywords as you are using in your hyperlink.

Construct your web site so that it consists of several pages. Each page should concentrate on one keyword or keyword phrase relating to your site.

Submit your site to the major search engines. The submission is easily done by using the "add your URL" link found on the search engine site.

Links from good quality sites will help you rank well with some search engines. In addition, these links are another way for people to find your site. Find sites that complement yours and ask if they will consider reciprocal linking.

Finally, SEO experts have begun to recognize the power of blogging and blog linking strategies to enhance the ranking of your site. Just this month a master Internet marketer, Derek Gehl, released his new Blogging For Dollars course with tested techniques for using blogs to get often dramatic improvement in search engine position.
